Haleakula Crater

Wednesday, January 24, 2007

After checking out of our condo and having all day before our evening flight, we drove up to see Haleakala Crater "House of the Sun." Being at an elevation of 10,000 feet I can say that is the highest I have been on foot. It was truly amazing, even though I kept scaring myself.

It was really cloudy so once we got above the clouds we couldn't see anything below. We felt like we were on top of the world. I am really glad we took the drive up to the crater. It was a beautiful sight and maybe the next time we can go early (3am) and see the sunrise.

This is about 4,000 feet, where we are still below the clouds and you can see the West Maui Mountains in the back.

Haleakala Crater from visitor center lookout - 9,740 ft elevation.

the gang - Chelsey, Kevin, Mike, Mandy, Bryan, and Melissa.

One of my favorite pictures from the trip.

Second lookout- Pu'u'ula'ula Summit 10,023 ft elevation.

Standing on the summit with Mauna Kea (13,796 ft) and Mauna Loa (13,679 ft) from the Big Island in the background.
